Garths Ubuntu Experience - Open Source Operating System

Do you want to move away from windows? Perhaps you use or have considered a mac? Maybe you are a Unix user, who want to reduce costs and simplify setup and maintenance?

Save yourself some money and give Ubuntu a whirl. Ubuntu is a free Linux based open source operating system which can run on a large number of computers and in various ways.

Firstly you can run Ubuntu from a live cd (set bios to boot cd if it doesn't load). This gives you the opportunity to review a good portion of this Linux platform without disturbing any files whatsoever on the computer. The only draw back with testing the Ubuntu system like this is that you can not install any additional application etc.

Secondly you can install Ubuntu on top of windows, though who wants to do that if you really want to do away with windows, but it is a good option if you are not sure about how to correctly partition your hard drive (as below).

The next way will give you a dual boot system (as above) however it requires your hard drive to be partitioned to suit this Ubuntu layout.

The last option is an outright install of Ubuntu. This option is best, once you have tested using the methods described above and you are happy to run one system only.

Ubuntu itself comes in desktop and server versions. You can also get Ubuntu in other forms designed around different desktop environments and even specifically for education purposes and more.

Ubuntu is also packed with heaps of free software, such Open Office, Games, Graphic Applications, Browsers, Qcad and many many more, along with being packed full of drivers for numerous types of hardware like printers, video cards, etc.

You can obtain a free copy of a Linux antivirus utility from Avast for home use. You want to select the .DEB package in most instances, so keep that in mind when downloading any additional free software that you may require.

The Ubuntu community is around 4 million strong, so you have a great source of information should you require answers, regarding any number of topics.

Ubuntu has become such a great system that a number of organisations have replaced their previous Unix based systems, due to the limited outlay for setup and maintenance, along with being a lot easier to use, not to mention it being a solid reliable platform.

It certainly appears that Ubuntu has overtaken many of the previous leaders in Linux based operating systems. I believe Ubuntu is currently the best option for most first time Linux users, along with many experienced Unix and Linux junkies alike.
